In the Common Market, trade barriers between member nations were gradually eliminated, and common policies regarding transportation, agriculture, and economic relations with nonmember countries.

The EU could help to ensure that its members meet their armaments commitments by developing a common armaments policy. The basic aim of such a policy should be to provide stronger political direction for European co-operation in this area.
